James was right: ordering a turkey wasn’t that hard but needed to be done early. Aside from my beloved cranberry sauce, everything is easy enough to track down along with the usual list from Elliot. Evie comes with us so that I can pick out a wine for her, and I realize that I’m going to miss having her around after she leaves.

She talks excitedly about how she hadn’t truly expected to cross this item off her bucket list, so she’s extra thankful I’ve arranged the date for her.

“What else is on this bucket list of yours?” I ask, realizing I haven’t heard of many other items on it.

“Oh, nothing important, really,” she says as we weave around a group of people walking slowly and enjoying the unseasonably warm November morning. “It’s basically a list of things I want to do before turning the big thirty. I’ve got plenty of time, but I feel like going to grad school is going to take all the free time I have, and I want to move through some of them and —”

“Basically, she feels like her life is over when she turns thirty,” James interrupts. “She saw me hone in at thirty, and she saw our older sister go to med school and come out anything but carefree by the time she was thirty herself. I keep trying to tell her that just because you hone your focus at a certain point of life doesn’t mean you can’t have fun along the way,” he says, looking at her like every know-it-all big brother does. Just from that look alone, I want to immediately side with Evie.

“You just got so serious,” she pleads. “I feel like I need to wise up too, or something, but why not have a little fun in the process?”

“It’s not the age, Evie,” James says. “It’s the motivation.”

Evie looks at me, knowing she has an ally in me, but I don’t know how to counter that. I closed up completely at age twenty-eight, not because of age but because of what I’ve been through. It has much more to do with the personal decisions I can own. But not wanting to get too deep in my own reasons for straightening my arrow when I did, I nudge her in the shoulder before saying, “Hey, but having a romantic picnic with a Frenchman along the way isn’t so bad, huh?”

“For the record, he didn’t have to be French. I would have had a picnic with anyone under the Eiffel Tower,” she says as if she’s being the most reasonable person in the world. “I just read it in a book once, and it sounded nice.”

“Wait, was it the book by Amelia Greene?” She's almost become a cliché from how popular she is, but I like to think of myself as an original fan.”

“Yes! Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this hasn’t come up yet! She's my favorite. Like, favorite favorite.”

“Have you read all of her books? I hear she's about to dabble in mystery .
